Gloria Dei Lutheran Church
Governing Board Minutes
Minutes of April 15, 2004
President Dave Sengpiel called the meeting to order
at 6:30 p.m. Those in attendance were Norm Rinderknecht,
Dan Snyder, Dave Sengpiel, Deb Kesse, Lou Grotheer,
Pastor Burcham, and Faith Spark. There were no visitors.
Pastor Burcham opened with prayer and a devotional reading
from Max Lucado's book "He Still Moves Stones."
It centered on the question, "Where did Jesus go
to find his first missionary?" with focus on God
not being the enemy.
Dave Sengpiel requested that the minutes of the March
9, 2004 board meeting be read and approved. It was moved
by Norm Rinderknecht and seconded by Deb Kesse that
the minutes be approved. Motion carried.
Pastor Burcham presented the Senior Pastor's Report
to the board. The Lent and Easter worship attendance
increased over last year. Thank you to Dan Snyder, Steve
Kohtz, and the staff for an outstanding job in getting
everything ready for Easter. The worship attendance
has increased to an average of 811 each week. Praise
God. Confirmation Sunday is May 2, 2004, with four services
taking place. ChristCare Ministry needs a boost to encourage
more participation. This will be one of Pastor Phillip's
responsibilities Pastor Phillip's installation will
be May 16th at 3 p.m. There will be a reception for
him immediately following the service. Pastor Burcham
met with the Architect to discuss possible options concerning
the parking issue. There is a significant amount of
planning required by the City of Urbandale in order
to prepare an estimate for the board and ultimately
the congregation. Steve Kohtz is working with two companies
that specialize in multimedia for churches with the
possibility of adding it to our sanctuary. Once again,
significant planning is required to get an estimate
prepared for review as part of the annual budgeting
process and ultimate board and congregation approval.
Installing multimedia in the sanctuary will enhance
the worship experience and cut back on the costs of
paper and printing. The Urbandale 4th of July parade
will be using our parking lot for the end of the parade.
We will also host a barbecue tent at "Fall Into
Urbandale" the last weekend in September at Lakeside
Park. There will be updates on the organ fund posted
in the Weekly Word.
Vice President, Deb Kesse, presented a draft concerning
Gloria Dei Lutheran Church Pastor Policy Statement and
Gloria Dei Lutheran Church Governing Board Policy Statement.
She and Craig Braget are looking for nominations for
the three new Governing Board positions that will be
opening in June. The nominating committee will consist
of two governing board members and two at large members.
The financial records were presented and read. Deb Kesse
made a motion to approve the financial records with
a seconded by Dan Snyder. Motion carried.
The Budget Meeting will be June 6, 2004 at 6 p.m. and
a Congregational meeting will be June 13, 2004 at 6
p.m.
Pastor Burcham will be attending PLI, April 21st to
April 25th.
Old Business: None to discuss.
New Business: None to discuss.
With no further items to discuss, Deb Kesse made a motion
to adjourn the meeting with a second by Dan Snyder and
the meeting was adjourned at 7:50 p.m after reciting
the Lord's Prayer.
Respectfully submitted by Faith Spark, recording secretary.
