Gloria Dei Lutheran Church Governing Board
September 14, 2010
Mark Kramer offered the opening devotion and prayer.
Call to Order: President Kevin Kelley called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.
In attendance were Marv Rohn, Jason Hoffman, Scott Snyder, Barb Miles, Kevin Kelley, Casey Fluegge, Mark Kramer, and Pastor Burcham.
Not present were: Pamela Henkel and Lorrie Graaf.
Visitor Recognition: Laura Rath was present as recording secretary.
Monitoring Affirmation:
Parish Paper: The Board discussed the September topic: Planning for the Unexpected Financial Crisis.
Book Review: The Board completed their discussion of “The Servant Leader” by Ken Blanchard and Phil Hodges.
Consent Agenda:
- The minutes from the August 10, 2010 meeting were accepted by consensus.
- After discussion, the financial report was accepted by consensus.
Senior Pastor Report:
- The Governing Board Retreat will be held October 1-2, 2010 at Connxions.
- The Board set the date of June 5, 2011 for the Annual Meeting.
- Pastor Burcham reported on a plan to refurnish the Youth Center in order to make the room a multi-use room instead of the single use room that it currently is. The Board approved the proposed plan to purchase tables and chairs to replace the couches.
- Pastor Burcham reported that the Urbandale Food Pantry has more than tripled in clients from when it first opened and are moving to a new location with expanded hours. Gloria Dei has committed to purchase a commercial grade refrigerator and freezer for their new space so they can distribute perishable items. The congregation will be given an opportunity to donate for the purchase of these two items on Sept. 18/19 and Sept. 25/26.
Current Action Items:
Gloria Dei Foundation: Scott Snyder and Marv Rohn have continued to research and talk with former foundation members regarding the original intent of the foundation. A meeting will be scheduled and they will report again at the December Board meeting.
Congregational Listening Post – Board members had not heard anything to report.
The Board discussed suggested opportunities for the congregation to interact with the Board.
The subcommittee of Pamela Henkel, Lorrie Graaf, and Mark Kramer will continue their work in this area.
