Governing Board Minutes

Call to Order:
President Ken Wunsch called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. In attendance were Pastor Burcham, Doug Pals, Marv Rohn, Lorrie Graaf, Mark Pierson, Ken Wunsch, Shawn Woolman, and Kevin Kelley.

Visitor Recognition:
Laura Rath was present as recording secretary.

Pastor Burcham was recognized for his anniversary of 20 years in the ministry with a gift from the Board.

Monitoring Affirmation:

Parish Paper:
The Board briefly discussed “Giving to Congregations: Have Patterns Changed?” and its relation to our congregation.

Senior Pastor Report:

• Strategic Plan – Pastor Burcham reported that he plans to have the Ministry Destination prioritized by September.
• Steve Kammeyer will continue on the Finance Focus Group as a member of the congregation. When a new Executive Director joins the staff, that person will be on the focus group as a staff member.
• Pastor Burcham asked that the Governing Board members consider serving on the staffing committee to hire a new Executive Director.

Consent Agenda:

• The financial report was accepted by consensus.
• The minutes from the June 2008 meeting were accepted by consensus.
• The second quarter membership report (April-June 2008) was reviewed. Marv Rohn motioned to approve, seconded by Doug Pals. The Board unanimously approved.

Actions:

Officers 2008-2009:  
 Ken Wunsch – President, Laurie Peterson – Vice-President, Doug Pals – Treasurer, and Kevin Kelley – Secretary. Ken Wunsch motioned to elect, seconded by Doug Pals. The Board unanimously approved.

Congregational Listening Post: 
Attendance at all three informational meetings prior to the annual meeting were low. The meetings flowed well, and of those in attendance, there was good dialogue.

Annual Meeting: 
There were approximately 55 in attendance. Comments were heard regarding the absentee ballot system from the March 2008 Strategic Plan Congregational Vote, as well as comments that the Strategic Plan was not just Pastor Burcham’s plans. Pastor Burcham also pointed out that there are still a number of people against the move, and that we shouldn’t lose sight of that.

The Board briefly discussed research gathered by Carole White of LCEF regarding congregations that move. It shows that congregations that move usually lose members right away, but gain those numbers back within the first year of having moved. It then becomes a stronger and healthier church congregation. Pastor Burcham will e-mail this research to the Board.

Desired Outcomes Reporting: 
The Board briefly discussed the Reveal survey, which will be available in August 2008.

Lead Gloria Dei: 
Pastor Burcham stated that the Lead Gloria Dei class will be offered again in the fall.

Housekeeping:

Discovery 201: 
The next date for Discovery 201 is November 9, 2008, from 3-7 p.m. Ken Wunsch requested that two representatives from the Board attend Discovery 201. Pastor Burcham reported that both Discovery 101 and 201 are being reworked by Pastor Kendall Meyer and that they will have new names.

Adjournment:
After the Lord’s Prayer, the meeting was adjourned at 7:20 p.m.
